Heat and Energy Recovery Ventilators

When the days first start to get really hot, or cold, what’s the first change you make in your home? Before you turn on the climate control, or do anything else? We’re going to guess that you probably close the doors and windows, like most people do. That does certainly help to keep your indoor climate more tightly controlled. However, it also does one other thing: cut off the flow of fresh air into the home.

Axiom Home Services, Inc. offers comprehensive installation and replacement services for heat and energy recovery ventilators throughout Albuquerque, NM. If you need an HRV or ERV system installed or replaced, we are here for you. Contact us today to schedule an appointment with one of our installation specialists. We believe at Axiom Home Services, Inc., you’re only as good as your last job.

Why Your Home Could Benefit From an ERV or HRV

As we said above, the entire reason that you might want to install an ERV or HRV system has to do with climate control and air flow. If you’ve ever been in a home with all the doors and windows closed for a long period of time, then you know how it feels to breathe in that stale air after a while. Nobody likes that feeling, but nobody likes leaving their home open to the elements during the most brutal seasons of the year, either. An ERV or HRV helps remedy the situation by introducing fresh air flow into the home in a controlled manner.

How They Work

There are two different system types that fall into this category: Energy Recovery Ventilators and Heat Recovery Ventilators.

  • A Heat Recovery Ventilator, or HRV, is a system that sits in the ductwork of the home, typically right before the ducts connect to the climate control systems. Inside the ventilator is a heat exchanger, which allows air to flow through it in both directions. The ventilator has an extra bit of duct that runs to it from the outside of the home, so that it has access to fresh air.

While your climate control systems are operating, the ventilator will bring in fresh air from the outside and exchange it for the stale air already inside. The two air flows equalize each other’s temperature as they pass through the heat exchanger, allowing the system to introduce fresh air into the home without compromising climate control.

  • An Energy Recovery Ventilator, or ERV, is the same as an HRV in almost every way, with one big difference. The ERV can also maintain the same humidity levels in the home while operating, which can be important for those with chronically dry or humid air.
